Ceramic Torso
This is a ceramic torso I made in 2022. It is coil-built with white earthenware, fired to Cone 06 and after I decided using oil pastel was just not what I wanted, I decided to cover it with papier mache and then use soft pastels in warm and cool colors. The end result is not bad – but it wasn’t good either. While it didn’t crack in the firing, I should have stopped there, however, I felt like it was bland after it had been fired. Given more time, I would have fired it a second time and used some transparent matte glazes so that the figure appeared realistic. I love the way it looked and fully plan on making another one. The next one will be better. And honestly, I think if I just used a clay that fired to a nice dark, chocolate brown rather than this stark white, I would have been happier. Live and learn.
